Discover South Iceland
Glaciers – Geysirs – Volcanoes – Mountains – Waterfalls

Towns : Skógar

In the heart of the southern part of Iceland, located next to the magnificent waterfall Skógafoss, is an interesting museum which was established in the year 1949. The museum has grown immensely through the years. There you can now see how the Icelanders lived in the past in small turf houses and learn the history of Icelandic inhabitants.

The museum is divided into a couple of parts filled with interesting items related to Iceland’s history. There are tools and instruments used for fishing and farming, old handicrafts and papers, clothes and things related to superstition to name a few.

A few years ago the museum opened a new exhibition house, specialized in objects which tell the story of technology and transportation and its development in Iceland in the 19th and 20th century. Old tackles, car engines, motorcycles and road construction instruments are examples of the items on display.

If you want to get to know the Icelandic society and how the Icelandic people used to live and work, you should definitely make a stop at the museum at Skógar. It is an ideal place, surrounded by beautiful nature and many interesting sites and after you have strolled around you can get refreshment at the cafeteria and buy various items in the souvenir shop.

Hotel Skogar is a quaint and luxurious outique hotel. Situated right by the world famous waterfalls Skogafoss. The hotel has 12 rooms all with private facilities
