Activities : Swimming in South Iceland

Swimming is a national sport in Iceland. Most of the 120 pools all around Iceland are outdoor pools. The water is geothermal from hot springs. For a traveler, a geothermal dip is an ideal way to relax after an exerting hike or busy day, but swimming is also a necessary skill in a society that depends on fishing and it is a mandatory subject on the school curriculum. Swimming is the least expensive activity for tourists in Iceland and free in some natural hot springs around the country. There are heated outdoor swimming pools open all year round located in both nearby Hella and Hvolsvöllur.
